The 2018 "Legislative Award"  was presented during the Veterans of Foreign Wars Annual  Convention.

RI Veterans of Foreign Wars honors Representative Vella-Wilkinson with Legislative Award

STATE HOUSE — The Rhode Island Veterans of Foreign Wars presented Rep. Camilla F.J. Vella-Wilkinson (D-Dist. 21, Warwick) with the 2018 Legislative Award during a ceremony Thursday night at the Radisson Hotel in Warwick.

“I’m proud and humbled to receive this award from the VFW, one of the most active veterans’ organizations in the country,” said Representative Vella-Wilkinson, a retired naval officer and member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. “I understand firsthand many of the issues facing veterans today; and I will continue to do what I can to thank them for the sacrifices they made serving their country.”

In 2017, Representative Vella-Wilkinson began an annual veterans’ outreach program at the State House, affording veterans the opportunity to meet their legislators and learn of the various programs available to them. This year, she organized a boot camp breakfast to honor veterans on Armed Forces Day and hosted the House of Representatives’ observance of the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day.

In her inaugural session, she introduced a veterans’ affairs reform law that changes the veterans' services strategic plan advisory committee to provide effective support for veterans and to collaborate and coordinate existing state, federal, and private veterans' services to meet and exceed the needs and expectations of Rhode Island veterans and their families.

Last year, the General Assembly passed a law introduced by Representative Vella-Wilkinson (D-Dist. 21, Warwick) to grant instate tuition status at state operated schools to active duty and reserve members stationed in Rhode Island.

Most recently she sponsored a bill passed by the House that would direct the Department of Education to utilize the federal Troops to Teachers program.
